Playlist of My Life: Obed Padilla
Music provides an auditory and emotional setting that allows us to retrieve memories.
The same part of the brain that is in charge of processing our senses is also responsible, in part, for storing emotional memories. In a way, music works like a time machine.
Memories associated with smell and sound tend to be older and thought of less often meaning that the recollection is quite vivid when it happens and can be very powerful. However, people’s memories are known to be notoriously unreliable even when vivid. Often, when retelling a story, there are memory distortions and details inevitably change. We are not concerned with measuring the accuracy of the memories attached to the songs; we are interested in using the playlist and the emotional memories tied to the songs as a gateway to connect with each other in a deeper and more intimate way. There is value in the way we choose to illustrate a memory– how the narrator utilizes the liberty of perception to tell a story.
How we interpret and unravel a memory can reveal to us what at this point in our lives we deem significant, the bits our awareness chose to highlight as worthy over others, and how in tune they are with the way we think and feel now. By telling our memories, which are likely inaccurate, we allow one another to take a peek into the window of our creative mind.
Like we say in Mexico “el sordo no oye pero bien que compone”. In a way, we are creating memories in the present.
